The Board of Public Works is the utility entity of the Bamberg municipal government, separate from the City of Bamberg and governed by a three-person commission. The primary mission of the Board of Public Works is to provide customers with reliable water, wastewater, electric, and natural gas utilities at reasonable and competitive rates.

The Public Utility Billing division is responsible for all activities related to accurately generating and collecting all utility bills for City customers. The meter readers read all-electric, gas, and water meters and connect and disconnect services, as necessary. The customer service personnel are responsible for explaining billing questions, establishing new accounts, and generating work orders for field crews.

The City of Shelby is a full service utility community. The Shelby utilities system is a municipally owned and operated public utility system which provides our residential, commercial and industrial customers with: Water, Sewer, Electric and Natural Gas. In addition to the four utilities, the offices for the Stormwater Department and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Department are located at the Utilities Operations Center.

It was the late 1940's or early 1950's when the Federal Power Commission allocated a portion of the natural gas that flowed through the Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Company to the municipalities of Clinton and Newberry.  This pipeline ran through northwestern South Carolina.  It was decided that the best way to accomplish this was to create a transmission line from Newberry through Clinton to Fountain Inn, where it would connect to the Transcontinental line.  From there, that line would s
